Phytoremediation of contaminated soils

Discription: The project investigates the possibilities of phytoremediation of metal contaminated soils. Several plants are studied in order to maximize the metal extraction from the soil by making the right choice of plant. On some types of soil (especially the calcareous, clayey soils) the remediation process is in general very difficult, and today there are actually no methods that have proved to work in a bigger scale. The time frame for phytoremediation on these soils is also long. By the use of large scale lysimeters we wish to show that the mobile fraction of the metals are removed by the plants leaving behind a heavy metal fraction that is bound tightly in the soil.
