ME362 Forest Microbiology

Description: Lecture course. The course covers the microflora of living roots, stems, needles and leaves. Specific focus will be on diseases affecting the various tissue organs of forest trees. The course will also address the many functions of fungi in the uptake and cycling of nutrients in forest ecosystems, microbial parasitic and symbiotic interactions with trees, decomposition of forest litter and wood debris. Strong emphasis will be placed on the genetics, biochemistry, physiology, evolutionary biology & population dynamics of the microorganisms involved. Current advances in these fields of study, made possible by use of novel and modern biological techniques will be demonstrated.
